Come To The Circus

Haley Doran, Opinion Editor

This year about 120 of Norwalk High School’s students will be joining the circus in the Norwalk High School Music Department’s spring production of the musical Barnum.

The musical Barnum recounts the story of Phineas Taylor Barnum who, with little support of his wife, Charity, attempts to create a freak show which includes the oldest woman alive, Joice Heth, the smallest man in the world, General Tom Thumb, and a Swedish opera singer, Jenny Lind.

Barnum is unlike any musical that Norwalk High School has ever done.  Cast members are taking gymnastics classes, learning how to juggle, how to spin plates, magic tricks, balloon animals as well as many other circus tricks.

Senior and co-dance captain Shelby Vetare said, “It’s different from anything I’ve done.  I’m really excited to continue my acrobatic training and hopefully the audience will love the show.”

Unfortunately due the unpredictable forecasts, rehearsals have been less consistent as usual but the cast, pit, and crew have been working diligently to get back on their feet,   “Even with all the weather setbacks the show and all the rehearsals are going great! With most of the scenes finished and dance numbers being completed we are making great time.  By opening night I know everything will be finished but I hope to see the whole cast having fun with the show as well,” said senior co-dance captain Emily Rybnick who is also playing Charity Barnum.  Mrs. Pettibone, Barnum’s director, concluded saying rehearsals were going “wonderfully.”

Overall, the cast is thrilled about the show and learning new skills. “I’m really excited for the show, I’ve met a bunch of new people and it’s a lot of fun,” says Lauren Madden (’16)

Performances are April 26, 27, 28 and May 3, 4, 5 and tickets are on sale now.  Tickets can be purchased at the door, on the Norwalk High School Music Department website www.norwalkhighmusicdept.com, or by phone at (203) 838-4411 x13377
