What to Watch on Netflix

Check out some of Netflix's hottest shows, available instantly to Netflix users.

Upon arriving in American society, Netflix has dazzled its audiences with rapidly streaming shows and classic entertainment for all ages. In being so successful, Netflix has dipped into the production industry, captivating audiences with series such as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Hemlock Grove, and Arrested Development.

Orange is the New Black

Making its début appearance on July 11th 2013, Orange is the New Black has received astounding reviews in a short period of time. The talented cast convincingly portrays the life of Piper Chapman, a recently convicted felon who must struggle with life in an all-women’s prison. This dramatic tale provides incite into what prison life resembles (although the show itself hyperbolizes certain concepts) and adds romance between characters and comedic dialog. Overall, the show has been a success with many viewers and critics alike, including San Francisco Chronicle writer David Wiegand, who commented, “In every case, there is an abiding feeling for character and authenticity that helps elevate Orange Is the New Black to a new definition of television excellence.”

House of Cards

Similar in review success is House of Cards, which first aired on February 1st, 2013. Leading man Francis Underwood plays the role of the cutthroat politician fighting for the Secretary of State position promised to him by the newly elected President. “Deeply cynical about human beings as well as politics and almost gleeful in its portrayal of limitless ambition, House of Cards is a wonderfully sour take on power and corruption,” said Denver Post writer Joanne Ostrow. The dramatic series gives the viewers a look into the politics of our society and the nature of human beings in competition.

Hemlock Grove

Aniother Netflix original is Hemlock Grove, a thriller series centered around a diverse town that has many secrets. The corruption of the wealthy business owners and the tragedy of the poveris community combat while murderous streaks and suspected villains run rampant. The Philadelphia Inquirer writer David Hiltbrand stated, “It manages to be lush, gross, frightening, and ridiculous–all at the same time.

Arrested Development (season 4)

Although it is not originated from Netflix, Arrested Development continued its fourth season on Netflix as an exclusive series extension. Since being canceled by Fox in 2006, Netflix picked up where the third season left off and continued the shenanigans of the Bluth family. However, instead of continuing the narration from the main character Michael, the entire cast has a narration of their own, throwing an unexpected twist to the new season. The change in structure catches the attention of the viewes as well as The Hollywood Reporter writer Tim Goonman, who commented, “The Rashomon-style storytelling takes a bit to get used to, and the sometimes feverish flow of the jokes (which fans may remember from the hall-of-fame first three seasons) struggle to unleash themselves in the first couple of episodes, but then it snowballs into seven-and-a-half hours of hilarity just waiting for a movie to follow it up.”
